Apple’s new 2.2 software

Apple released the new software one day before Verizon Wireless and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Storm hit store shelves, but analysts say it was just a coincidence. Now that the iPhone has bested the cellphone industry in the US, they’ve set their sights on a new target: handheld gaming devices. Apple CEO Steve Jobs commented in an interview with the Wall Street Journal recently that the popularity of games on the device could make it a more convincing gift option. According to The NPD Group, the leader in market research for the wireless industry, Apple’s iPhone 3G surpassed the Motorola RAZR as the leading handset purchased by adult consumers* in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2008. Australia is now the cheapest place in the world to buy an iPod, thanks to the Australian dollar’s sharp decline, a new study shows.And it’s not just good news for music lovers, with CommSec saying the currency’s decline will boost Australia’s trade competitiveness and help insulate the nation from the global economic downturn.The study conducted by CommSec reflects its “iPod index”, which measures the price of an 8GB iPod nano in 62 countries to compare currencies.
